One of Ocean Conservancy’s most well-known efforts is the International Coastal Cleanup Program. Is a member or observer of many Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs), contractual multilateral bodies and other bilateral, regional and global organizations that oversee the cooperative sustainable management of shared fish stocks and other living marine resources. It was founded in 2001 by The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Oak Foundation, the Marisla Foundation, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. WWF’s unique way of working combines global reach with a foundation in science, involves action at all levels, from local to global, and ensures the delivery of innovative solutions that meet the needs of humans and nature.

Oceana is the largest organization in the world dedicated exclusively to marine protection.

What is marine protection?

Most destruction of marine habitats is caused by pollution, commercial fishing equipment, coastal development, and other human activities. A wide range of challenges in the area of nature conservation must be met with a wider variety of responses from scientists and conservationists. In its simplest form, it is a logic model that asserts that a desired conservation outcome can be achieved by implementing a series of nested activities. For some species, downlisting could be politically rather than scientifically motivated, as downlisting species could remove restrictions on activities or development.

Federal legislation of the United States showed its support for marine conservation by institutionalizing protected areas and creating estuaries.
